Adelie Penguins are very expressive animals. There is a non-stop battle for space in their crowded rookeries, and it is hard to hear your self talk over the din of penguin chatter.

Many birds seem to seek peace and quiet on the surrounding ice flows. Here, we have an interesting scene. The penguin in the back is really carrying on. The other poor fellow turned to look at me as if to say "Get me out of here!" It seems even among the residents of Antarctica that some peoples conversations just drag on and on and on.

The colony near where this scene was taken is located near the U.S. Research base, Palmer Station, which is studying the Ozone Hole which appears over much of Antarctica during the early part of Spring.
