Throughout Utah and Arizona hidden deep in Canyon Country the adventurous traveler will find the "slot canyons." Formed by thousands of years of erosion, mostly from flash floods, these narrow passageways through the sandstone are mystical places where the normal laws of physics seem to be defied.

Light comes from all over, sometimes bouncing off the floor then the wall and then another wall until a fantastic kaleidoscope of color is created. These are sacred places for the local Navajo who hold yearly rituals to the "canyon spirits" and tightly control who may pass through these unique places.

Inside the canyons seem to "breath" and it is so silent that the only sound is usually the flutter of bird's or bat's wings which live high up in the canyons recesses. Sometimes you get the distinct feeling that your being watched, and a scan of the canyon walls might reveal an owl peering at you from a hole in the wall. In this canyon I noticed a cat-like face in the wall. I was so intrigued that I did a 4 x 5 of it even though the light was not ideal. I have since tried to find this spot again and have been unable. It is as though it were an apparition in stone, revealing itself only once to me.
