Once a year the Brig Pilgrim makes a journey along the California Coast. Depending on wind and weather, the Channel Islands off Santa Barbara are a main destination offering unspoiled views of pristine wilderness and wildlife. East Anacapa with it's soaring cliffs and abundant wildlife is a perfect location for sailing. This picture was taken through a huge natural arch at the east end of Anacapa. Centuries of wave action have created an opening large enough for small boats to pass through. It was a difficult shot as it was necessary to shoot from over 100 feet away from the arch using a telephoto lens in order to get the ship to fill the window. These lenses are notoriously difficult to hand hold in the best of circumstances and this was shot from a bouncing inflatable boat |
